WILKES-BARRE, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae, announced a $10,000 grant to the United Way of Wyoming Valley to help with urgent community needs in the wake of historic flooding last month. Thousands of area residents were affected when the Susquehanna River overflowed its banks, the worst flooding in more than three decades.

“Our colleagues at Sallie Mae provide us with tremendous year round support and they are definitely a true friend of the community. In this time of need, The Sallie Mae Fund’s philanthropic generosity is to be commended.”

“United Way is very thankful of The Sallie Mae Fund for supporting our flood relief efforts,” Norene K. Bradshaw, interim executive director, United Way of Wyoming Valley. “Our colleagues at Sallie Mae provide us with tremendous year round support and they are definitely a true friend of the community. In this time of need, The Sallie Mae Fund’s philanthropic generosity is to be commended.”

Many of the social service agencies in the Northeastern Pennsylvania community have experienced an overwhelming demand for assistance requests from area residents impacted by the flood. Through a grant process, United Way’s Flood Relief Fund will be available to all local charitable nonprofit organizations. A Community Impact Committee will review the requests and aid will be distributed as quickly as possible to meet the most urgent and critical of needs in the Wyoming Valley.

“On behalf of The Sallie Mae Fund as well as local Sallie Mae employees, I am grateful for the vital work performed by United Way and area nonprofit groups to help the area recover and rebuild,” said Troy Standish, head of Sallie Mae’s Pennsylvania center in Hanover Township.”

The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization sponsored by Sallie Mae, achieves its mission — to increase college access for America's students — by supporting programs and initiatives that help open doors to higher education. The Fund also supports employee volunteerism and community service in the communities where Sallie Mae employees live and work. For more information, visit www.salliemaefund.org.
