Six Ways to Improve Claim Communication
By Kevin Quinley
Risk managers sometimes have a hard time understanding the claims process. Miscommunication between insurance claim adjusters and risk managers can cause problems in settling and reserving cases, along with needless “friction” and conflict. Six ways for risk managers to bridge the communications gap to make claims flow more smoothly: 1. Establish clearly written claim guidelines/expectations for the carrier or claims staff 2. Provide realistic authority levels 3. Exert supervisory attention for certain types or sizes of claims 4. Encourage adjusters to contact them on complex cases, or where frequency may be problematic. 5. Maintain communications after the policy goes into force. 6. Clearly communicate with the insurer about being involved in claims. Show real interest in learning a little more about the process.
